Luxury Watch:BLU

For those who don't know, BLU is the acronym for Berhard Lederer Universe, whose headquarters is in Colombier, a village by the picturesque Lake Neuchâtel in Switzerland.


Born in Kornwestheirm, Germany, Bernhard Lederer has been studying and making unique and complicated watches since the late 1970s. One of this first serious creations was a table watch with perpetual calendar and moon phase indication, made to such high level of accuracy that the first correction would only be required after 1000 years. He then moves from Germany to Switzerland in 2000, and establishes Blu - Source du Temps SA and takes up the lead role of technical and art director, overseeing all Blu's collections and infusing it with his skill, innate knowledge and highly original interpretation of time.


Blu's watchmaking philosophy is simple - to tell and interpret time in a totally revolutionary way using traditional high watchmaking skills. Uniqueness is also one of Blu's pillars. Two key elements are very important for Bernhard Lederer: mechanics and aesthetics. "These two factors are very closely linked," he says, "and they are inseparable in my watches. I do not believe in complications for complications' sale and ordinary watches definitely do not appeal to me."


One of the most applauded pieces created by the Lederer recently has to be the Blu Majesty MT3 which contains a highly complicated system of three corresponding tourbillons with individual turning speeds. In order to obtain a logical and organic rotational speed, the escapement in the semi-flying tourbillion beats at a rate of 2 Hertz while the balance wheel has a huge diameter of 13mm and swings considerable slower than most contemporary movements.
